Here are the best ways to save money on your Adwords campaign. Why would you want to do this? Because it frees up more budget for your best-converting keywords, making you more money. And who doesn’t want to save money anyway?
1. Check your device settings
By default, when you set up a new campaign on Adwords, your ads will show on every device by default. This is regardless of whether you have a mobile-optimised website. Go into a campaign, find the settings tab and click ‘Devices’. You can reduce your mobile bids from here. Decreasing by 100% will take them down to zero. You should then get a mobile version of your website live, before 21 April if you can as that is Google’s mobile friendly deadline.
2. Check your location settings
Changing location settings is an easy way to save money on Adwords. If you are based in the UK you will be serving ads to the whole of the UK by default. But you may not deliver to Northern Ireland, or some of the islands dotted around England & Scotland. Exclude these in your location settings. Then click advanced settings and tick the ‘show ads to people in my target location’ – otherwise you will be serving ads to people who may be viewing pages about your target location, but who are not actually in your target location – e.g. an ex-pat living in Spain. This traffic is unlikely to convert.
3. Add more negative keywords
Negative keyword management is crucial to saving money on Google Adwords. The beauty of Adwords is that you can serve ads to people who have typed in words or phrases of your choosing – but you need to eliminate non-relevant terms. For instance, if you sell chainsaws you probably don’t want your ads to show for chainsaw massacre or chainsaw accident video. Even if people don’t click your ad for these non-relevant searches (some definitely will), it will harm your click-through rate as you’ll be generating impressions with only a few clicks. This harms your Quality Score and pushes your overall cost per click up.
